Why buy a jet?High pressure jetting has been around since the early 1950's. What once was an expensive and massive jetting machine that required huge quantities of water has evolved into a highly efficient and manageable jetting unit affordable for the average plumber.
High pressure water jets are great investments for contractors, municipalities, or anyone in the drain cleaning industry. High pressure units are useful in any industries with reoccurring blockage issues or where byproducts regularly create drainage problems. Water jets are most commonly used for sewer drains and storm lines, but they are also used in process pipes, chimneys, and stacks that accumulate debris over time. Additionally, they are great machines for pressure washing and heavy duty wash downs, such as in quarries, airports, and stadiums.
What is high pressure jetting?High pressure jetting is using streams of high pressure water to clean, cut, and remove debris. The main components of a high pressure jet are the pump, engine, hose, and nozzle. The pump and engine work together to create high pressure water through the hose to the nozzle. The nozzle has small precision machined orifices that restrict the water flow, thus creating high pressure build up in the hose. Water shoots out of these orifices, and converts from pressure to velocity, and it is the speed of the water combined with the volume that does the work. The angle of the jets in the nozzle create the forward propulsion to take the nozzle up the pipe. Forward facing jets will clear and cut through debris, while rear facing jets flush debris back and propel the nozzle through the pipe. Rotating nozzles create a 360 degree cleaning action which is ideal for grease and root removal.
When should a high pressure jet be used?High pressure jetting is an extremely efficient way to clear a blocked pipe or drain. Jetting can be done in any sized pipes as long the appropriate pressure and flow is used. Sewage, grease, scale, roots, etc. are all debris that can be blasted away with a high pressure jet.
When it comes to drain cleaning, preventative maintenance is very important. Waiting until a drain is completely blocked is an expensive inconvenience that can shut down businesses, roads, buildings etc. Routine maintenance with a high pressure jet will help to avoid these issues before they happen.
Where are some places high pressure units can be utilized?
All high pressure jetting units have six major components:High Pressure Water Pump - a pump that is designed to pressurize water at a certain water flow rate. The pump must be reliable, able to sustain high pressure water output to perform work on a daily basis without failure.
US Jetting recognizes that the high pressure water pump is the central element of any high pressure jetting unit. This position has evolved into a corporate mission of manufacturing high pressure water pumps that possess the highest performance reliably rates in the industry. Developing a series of High Pressure - Low Flow pumps that are capable of running dry or out of water, US Jetting has become the premier manufacturer of high pressure water jetting equipment used within the sewer & drain industry. Not stopping at the development & manufacture of high pressure jetting pumps, US Jetting manufactures complete turn-key high pressure jetting units to maintain overall unit quality and performance.
Since 1991, US Jetting has designed, manufactured, and field tested high pressure water pumps that have resulted in three variants to form the product backbone of the high pressure jetting product line. All three pumps are designed to consistently produce water at 4,000 PSI with water flow rates up to 25 gallons per minute. The US Jetting RPD (Radial Piston Diaphragm) pump has an added benefit of using brackish or saltwater for high pressure jetting tasks. Higher flow pumps are now also available up to 65 gpm. All US Jetting high pressure pumps are easily serviced with simple hand tools and a torque wrench.
Engines - diesel, gasoline or electric; the engine must be powerful enough to provide the horsepower to drive the high pressure water pump. Engine reliability is just as critical as the reliability of the high pressure water pump.
US Jetting utilizes Hatz, Kubota, Fiat, and JCB air and water cooled diesel engines for the majority of high pressure units manufactured for sewer & drain cleaning applications. These engines have a proven track record of reliability & endurance equivalent to the reliability of US Jetting high pressure pumps. The Hatz Diesel with the Silent Pack option for noise reduction has been a popular option for low-noise emission units.
Hose - high pressure hose is critical for delivering the high pressure water from the pump to the nozzle. High pressure jetting hose must be rated to have a minimum burst rating of 2.5 times the actual working pressure. A hose reel is critical for the management and handling of long lengths of high pressure jetting hose for both working efficiency and convenience. High pressure jetting hoses must be flexible enough to negotiate pipe bends or elbows when encountered.
For high pressure water flow up to 18 GPM, US Jetting installs 1/2" inside diameter lightweight high pressure hose. The 1/2" hose has a minimum burst rating of 16,000 PSI for almost a 4:1 safety margin.
For 4025 units, US Jetting installs 5/8" inside diameter lightweight high pressure jetting hose. The 5/8" hose has a minimum burst rating of 16,000 PSI for almost a 4:1 safety margin.
For flows up to 40GPM, 3/4" hose is used and above 40GPM, 1" hose is utilized. US Jetting now has 3/4" and 1" rated hose for 4,000 PSI operating pressure.
Hose Reel - US Jetting constructs high pressure hose reels in house. The hose reel sides or dishes are stamped from 1/4" diameter steel for durability that can resist hose expansion. The center drum of the hose reel is also constructed from 1/4" diameter steel for added strength. The reel spans between two heavy A frame supports with a pillow block bearing. Hose reels are powered by a heavy-duty hydraulic motor. Reels have a maximum capacity of 600ft of 1" hose and over 1000ft of 1/2" hose.
Water Storage Tank - water tank capacity has no effect on the ability of a high pressure jetting unit to clean a pipe. Water storage tanks are merely an indication of time available between working and refills. The tanks allow the high pressure jetting unit to work remotely from a water source between replenishments. Some high pressure jetting units may not contain a large water tank, only a buffer tank supplied by a constant water supply hose to feed the pump.
Transporting too much or too little water to the work site can increase overall operating costs. If water is available at the worksite, the need to transport water or tank capacity can be reduced without the loss of work efficiency. If water is not readily available at the worksite, larger water tank capacity becomes more economical. The size of the tank needed should be based upon types of jetting jobs expected. Units with 300 gallon water tanks (with the weight of water) and other jetting components can be mounted upon a single axle trailer. Increase tank capacity to a 600 gallon tank with the same components, and a tandem axle trailer will be required to carry the total weight load. Units of up to 1200 gallons capacity are available.
Carriage - a platform chassis or vehicle to mount the high pressure jetting unit, hose reel and water storage tank for transport to and from jobsites. The carriage, whether a truck chassis or single or tandem axle trailer is dependent upon the total weight of all components and the weight of the water being carried.
Standard production US Jetting trailer models are produced for inventory stock or to fill customer orders. Truck mounted units (either open or enclosed body) and enclosed trailer units are designed and manufactured to specific customer orders. For high pressure jetting in areas of cold weather, units can be mounted within enclosed trucks or trailers. Enclosed truck and trailer units have the added benefit of additional inside secure storage areas to carry related sewer & drain cleaning equipment. Exterior side panels of enclosed units provide great opportunity for business advertising graphics.
