Selecting A High Pressure Jetting Unit For Sewer & Drain Cleaning Applications
Selection of a high pressure jetting unit for sewer and drain cleaning applications must be made after careful consideration. All high pressure jetting units are expensive machines expected to perform profitable work on a daily basis. In some ways, all high pressure jetting units are alike in that all contain the same components, but differ in the quality, durability and design of the components used. US Jetting has a fundamental theory for high pressure jetting units that is High Pressure - Low Flow units outperform Low Pressure - High Flow units of the same engine horsepower range.

All high pressure jetting units have five major components in common, components that should be reviewed before the purchase of any unit.
High Pressure Water Pump - a pump that is designed to pressurize water at a certain water flow rate. The pump must be reliable, able to sustain high pressure water output to perform work on a daily basis without failure. US Jetting recognizes that the high pressure water pump is the central element of any high pressure jetting unit. This position has evolved into a corporate mission of manufacturing high pressure water pumps that possess the highest performance reliably rates in the industry. Developing a series of High Pressure - Low Flow pumps that are capable of running dry or out of water, US Jetting has become the premier manufacturer of high pressure water jetting equipment used within the sewer & drain industry. Not stopping at the development & manufacture of high pressure jetting pumps, US Jetting manufactures complete turn-key high pressure jetting units to maintain overall unit quality and performance. To complement this effort, US Jetting manufactures a complete line of nozzles, accessories and options to deliver high pressure water from the jetting unit to the area of work.

Since 1992, US Jetting has designed, field tested and manufactured high pressure water pumps that has resulted in three variants to form the product backbone of the high pressure sewer jetting unit product line. All three pumps are designed to consistently produce water at 4,000 PSI with water flow rates up to 25 gallons per minute. The US Jetting RPD (Radial Piston Diaphragm) pump has an added benefit of using brackish or saltwater for high pressure jetting tasks. All US Jetting high pressure pumps are easily serviced with simple hand tools and a torque wrench.
Engines - diesel, gasoline or electric; the engine must be powerful enough to provide enough horsepower to drive the high pressure water pump. Engine reliability is just as critical as the reliability of the high pressure water pump. US Jetting utilizes Hatz & Deutz air-cooled diesel engines for the majority of high pressure jetting units manufactured for sewer & drain cleaning applications. These engines have a proven track record of reliability & endurance equivalent to the reliability of US Jetting high pressure pumps. The Hatz Diesel with the Silent Pack option for noise reduction has been a popular option for low-noise emission units.
Hose & Hose Reel - high pressure hose is critical for delivering the high pressure water from the pump to the nozzle or other tool for application use. High pressure jetting hose must be rated to have a minimum burst rating of 2˝ times the actual working pressure of the water. A hose reel is critical for the management and handling of long lengths of high pressure jetting hose for both working efficiency and convenience. Other factors to be considered is the outside diameter of the hose, high pressure jetting hoses must be flexible enough to negotiate pipe bends or elbows when encountered. For high pressure water flow up to 18 GPM, US Jetting installs 1/2" inside diameter lightweight high pressure jetting hose. The 1/2" hose has a minimum burst rating of 16,000 PSI for almost a 4:1 safety margin. The 1/2" hose is almost at maximum flow capacity (19 GPM) for water at 4,000 PSI. For high pressure water flow up to 25 GPM, US Jetting installs 5/8" inside diameter lightweight high pressure jetting hose. The 5/8" hose has a minimum burst rating of 16,000 PSI for almost a 4:1 safety margin. The 5/8" hose is almost at maximum flow capacity (19 GPM) for water at 4,000 PSI. Matching water flow to maximum hose flow capacity reduces the weight of the hose the nozzle has to pull. Years of experience has proven to US Jetting the need to construct their own high pressure jetting hose reels. Hose reel sides or dishes are stamped from 3/16" diameter steel for durability to resist hose expansion. The center drum of the hose reel is also constructed from 3/16" diameter steel for added strength. Spanning between two heavy a-frame supports with a pillow block bearing, hose reels are powered by a heavy-duty hydraulic motor. Water Storage Tank - water tank capacity has no effect on the ability of a high presure jetting unit to clean a pipe. Water storage tanks are merely a convienece, allowing the high pressure jetting unit unit to work remotely from a water source betwen replenishments. Some high pressure jetting units may not contain a large water tank, only a buffer tank supplied by a constant water supply hose to supply the pump. Water tank capacity has no effect on the cleaning ability of a high pressure jetting unit, only the working time between refills. Transporting too much or too little water to the work site can increase overall operating costs. If water is available at the worksite, the need to transport water or tank capacity can be reduced without the loss of work efficiency. If water is not readily available at the worksite, larger water tank capacity becomes more economical. Determing the required size of a water tank should be based upon common types of high pressure jetting jobs expected. Uits with 300 gallon water tanks (with the weight of water) and other jetting components can be mounted upon a single axle trailer. Increase tank capacity to a 600 gallon tank with the same components, a tandem axle trailer will be required to carry the total weight load. For truck mouted units, water storage tank capacity is based upon the truck chassis GVWR including other jetting unit components.
Carriage - a platform chassis or vehicle to mount the high pressure jetting unit, hose reel and water storage tank for transport to and from jobsites. The carriage, whether a truck chassis or (single or tandem axle) trailer is dependent upon the total weight of all components and the weight of carried water. Standard production US Jetting trailer models are produced for inventory stock or to fill customer orders. Truck mounted units (either open body or enclosed body) and enclosed trailer units are designed and manufactured to specific customer orders. Truck mounted units provide high pressure jetting units with 300 or 600 gallon water tanks for extended high pressure jetting periods with increased mobility and elimination of a tow vehicle. For high pressure jetting in areas of cold weather, units can be mounted within enclosed trucks or trailers. Enclosed truck and trailer units have the added benefit of additional inside secure storage areas to carry related sewer & drain cleaning equipment. Exterior side panels of enclosed units provide potential space for business advertising graphics.
